If there is ever a part of NYC that is so overlooked by the people of Manhattan, it is the South Street Seaport district. Coming from someone who, after living here for five years, has only visited it once, I find myself consistently daydreaming of that one perfect fall day I spent drinking and eating my way down the cobblestone streets. Why haven’t I been back since? Great freaking question. When I met my insta-turn-real-friend Emma of @lets.eat.yall (the ultimate #foodporn account behind a girl who is always in the know of the NYC restaurant scene) and she told me she was moving to this area, I immediately knew she had to be featured on Freckled Foodie & Friend’s Favorites. Not only will I now have a checklist of restaurants to go to in this dreamy secluded spot within our busy city that I have so carelessly ignored, but it will hopefully encourage all of you to also make your way alllll the way downtown. Check out all of Emma’s favorite picks below!
If you are from the great state of New Jersey (okay fine, or Long Island), you are well aware of the god forsaken awful place that is Penn Station. Yes, it provides (so called) “easy” transportation in and out of NYC from your home in NJ and makes it feasible to simply hop on a train into the city for dinner and drinks and then back home, but it is unfortunately not located in the best of areas. I cannot tell you how many times I have been asked “I need to grab dinner by Penn Station, any good recommendations?” Restaurateurs are finally starting to notice this area as a total outlier on the supply/demand table and opening some great new spots, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. Luckily, there are still some gems in the area, and I am fortunate to have a good friend, Lara from @_littlemissfoodie, to tell me where to go. As a fellow NJ resident, and knower of all great places near Penn Station, it was an absolute no brainer to have her featured on the Freckled Foodie & Friend’s Favorites to help everyone commuting find a great meal before they hop on the train (and pray NJT actually runs on schedule). Readers, its the beginning of the month, which means it is time for a new Freckled Foodie & Friend’s Favorites guide. For the second guide, we are featuring one of my dear friends and favorite accounts to follow, Molly, from @wiz_kaleifa. Check out all of her recommendations for her ‘hood within NYC, Chelsea. We hope you enjoy!
If cooking in the kitchen is my one true love, dining out is definitely my side piece. The excitement of trying a new restaurant and sharing the experience with the ones I love, combined with the unique atmosphere and menu that every worthwhile restaurant provides, makes my stomach and heart do a happy dance. With every restaurant I dine at and enjoy, I immediately place it into a sub-category in my mind (or the ongoing 5 page note on my iPhone) and mark it for a future date. Fortunately for my friends, when I receive texts asking for restaurant recommendations for specific neighborhoods or occasions, I am always fully prepared and equipped with a quick response. With my love for sharing dining experiences of all kind and making sure all of my friends and reader’s never waste a meal at an un-enjoyable restaurant, I have created a new venture on my blog: Freckled Foodie & Friends Favorites, a neighborhood guide from foodies you can trust. These aren’t your typical yelp reviews or google searches, but instead recommendations from food bloggers all over the country; people who take their food very seriously and who, I hope, you trust. Each guide will focus on recommendations from the writer’s specific neighborhood, because, what’s better than insight from a local!
To kick things off, the first guide will be to the West Village and written by yours truly, myself. Not only is this area filled an massive amount of NYC’s top restaurants and bars, but also the place I have been fortunate enough to call home for the past 4+ years.
